While we were on the Sepik, our guide, Steve Buku brought up the murder of the white man that had been mentioned to us by Teresa before we left Wewak.

He was horrified that such an attrocity had taken place, and he wanted to find out exactly what had happened. He started asking questions along the river, and asked us if we would mind stopping at the village where the white man was buried.

While this was a highly unusual turn for our trip to take, in our wildest dreams, we never imagined that we would suddenly be investigating a murder mystery.

Besides the general thrill of playing detectives, we were also very curious to find out what exactly had happened to this man.

Buku started asking all kinds of people what they knew about this individual, and we spent a couple of nights debating what had happened based on the very few details we had.

The night before we went to the village where the body had been found, we stayed in Moim, a neighbouring village with people that spoke the same language. Eddy, who was our host in Moim, was specifically coming with us the following day in order to speak to the villagers who had found the body. Steve made a point to tell us that it was better to go with Eddy, because he himself was not fluent in that particular dialect, and that the villagers would trust Eddy more, and feel more at ease while being questioned.
